Tees Valley School Games takes gold for inspiring school children to get into sport

Local sporting initiative draws inspiration from The Olympic and Paralympic Games as 1,000 school children across the Tees Valley united for the School Games County Final.

The Annual School Games County Finals, delivered by Tees Valley Sport, kicked off on Wednesday, June 19th. The sporting spectacle which took place at Middlesbrough Sports Village and Tennis World, including competitors of all ages and abilities from over 40 different Schools in the Tees Valley.

In attendance was Middlesbrough Mayor, Andy Preston who said: “It was fantastic to see so many schools across Tees Valley united, celebrating sport and physical activity together.

“The School Games is one of the academic calendar highlights and to see so many young people representing their district is a great achievement for them.”

Alongside the Middlesbrough Mayor were three other Mayors and Mayoresses of surrounding districts and England Women’s Rugby Captain Katy Daley-Mclean MBE opened the event. Katy inspired and motivated the young competitors with a fun filled warm up of ‘Katy Says’.

In addition to the competitive games were a range of try-it sessions, including rugby, judo, boxing, archery and more. Led by local clubs and players this provided an opportunity to inspire young girls to try new and different sports.

The unique opportunity for young people across the region aims to encourage involvement in sport and to be inspired by the spirit of the games values; Honesty, Self-Belief, Team Work, Passion, Respect, Determination and Fair Play. Those who are considered to have demonstrated the values throughout the day are rewarded individually.
